As part of our Healthy Purpose, the UK and Ireland have made a number of local commitments and goals for 2025 relating to the health of our planet, animals, people and organisation. What does ‘Responsible use of Parasiticides’ mean?

Following our One Health principles, responsible use of parasiticides means considering the patient being treated, the people around it, and the wider planet.
Bringing this information together to make an informed decision about the most appropriate:
- Spectrum of activity
- Frequency of administration
- Formulation of product
Making these recommendations on an individual basis whenever possible.

To prescribe responsibly, there must be a range of parasiticides to meet the needs of different patients – one size does not fit all.

We provide a broad range of trusted parasiticides for pets, with different indications and formulations that best suit the owner’s lifestyle.

We aim to provide a treatment that will suit your animals and your circumstances and enable prescribers to make responsible recommendations.

What about the environmental footprint of our farmers?

It has been widely covered in National and Global press that farming contributes to our carbon footprint. We have committed to helping farmers remove 21 million tons of emissions globally from our customers' farms whilst continuing to offer innovative products to help reduce the reliance on antimicrobials.

Healthier People

Elanco are very keen for employees to volunteer providing each employee with up to 3 days per year of paid community service. One of these days is via our Global Day of Purpose, but each quarter they are able to dedicate a half day to their local community or charity. In the UK and Ireland, we are aiming to collectively commit to 250 days per year.

Healthier Enterprise

The UK and Ireland Affiliate is proud of the commitments and steps we have made towards gender parity in leadership as well as gender pay.

We’re very excited to be working with Investors in the Environment in order to achieve environmental certification of our sustainability efforts. From our use of greener power, increased recycling and reduced waste of promotional materials we hope to be amongst the leading pharmaceutical companies when it comes to green credentials.

That’s why we are increasingly focused on disease prevention and early disease detection to reduce the need for antibiotics to treat animal illness.

Supporting Those Who Depend on Livestock for Their Livelihoods

Elanco was named to the Top 20 of FORTUNE’s 2021 Change the World list, recognising the positive impact of our profit-making operations in East Africa on the local livestock farming operations.

Promoting Food Security Efforts Around the World

Through the Elanco Foundation and our employee engagement efforts, we aid food distribution schemes for hungry families and donate to food banks and welfare organisations around the world. For example, Elanco Foundation provided 750,000 meals for hungry families during COVID-19 pandemic.

Helping Healthier Pets Help People

Cats and dogs are an important source of company and comfort. We investigate the bond we have with pets to understand the emotional connectivity between pet owners and their animals and to illustrate changes pet owners have made in activities and behaviours towards their pets since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sponsoring Research into the Effects of Facility Dogs on Children’s Hospital Workers

Since 2016, Elanco has provided a grant supporting a six-year partnership with Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to engage in long-term research on the impact of the human-animal bond on mental health and well-being.
: Through our Healthier Planet pillar, we contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and 13 (Climate Action).

We understand that our business operations have an impact on the environment. We are committed to minimising our own environmental footprint while leveraging product and service innovations to help our stakeholders advance their sustainability efforts. 

By 2030, we work toward achieving 100% renewable sources of electricity across our worldwide operations. Our largest manufacturing site in Kiel, Germany, already switched to using 100% wind energy sourced from Northern Germany. We continue to transition to renewable sources of energy wherever possible

We accelerate toward sustainable packaging. In October 2020, we committed to accelerating our journey to achieving a sustainable packaging strategy for our products, aiming to reduce the negative environmental and social impacts of packaging.

By 2030, we pledge to remove 21 million tons of emissions from our customers’ farms. We are our customers’ lead partner on their journey toward climate neutrality.

First U.S. FDA Approved Product for Ammonia Reductions

Elanco’s newest innovation is approved for the reduction of ammonia gas emissions per pound of live weight and hot carcass weight in beef steers and heifers. It is the first U.S. FDA approved product labelled to reduce ammonia gas emissions from an animal or its waste.

New Tools to Advance Livestock Sustainability

We announced UpLook™, and Insights Engine for Sustainable Progress, and created Athian, a company designed to certify, aggregate and monetise environmental reductions within the food system in partnership with start-up incubator High Alpha.

Leading the #AnimalsAreTheAnswer Conversation

Elanco is helping animal ag industry leaders and livestock producers reimagine the way we produce animal-source foods. Presented in partnership with Elanco and Agri-Pulse, the “Sustainable Solutions for Zero Hunger by 2030: A Vision For Animal Agriculture” Forum brought together key leaders across the animal protein food chain to discuss next steps of reducing the environmental impact of livestock production.

Investing in Environmental Conservation and Innovation

As part of a multi-year initiative to restore working grasslands in western Kansas, Elanco and Ducks Unlimited partner to restore grasslands and improve environmental sustainability. In the first year, the joint initiative restored 1,525 acres of working grasslands and improved carbon sequestration with 472.2 mtCO2e/year of increased sequestration and reduced emissions.

Together for Greener Cattle

Elanco is a founding member of the Greener Cattle Initiative, a research consortium that expects to award $5 million over the next five years to support research into tangible, actionable solutions for potentially reducing enteric methane emissions from cattle.
